Never to be forgotten, never to happen again: no amnesty!
It is essential to fight for the end of the amnesty for the criminals of the dictatorship and for exemplary punishment for the crimes of Bolsonaro and his gang.
On March 31 and April 1, demonstrations for historical memory and against the military dictatorship will take place in several cities across the country. In the midst of the political struggle against the Bolsonarism that expresses nostalgia for the civil-military dictatorship, it is fundamental to remember and give battle for the political meaning of the coup of 1964, which opened the way for the nefarious military dictatorship that for 21 years silenced, persecuted, imprisoned, tortured, and murdered thousands of Brazilians.
The lack of transitional justice left unpunished the protagonists, civilian and military, of the extreme right, whose heirs today regroup in the ranks of Bolsonarism. For this reason, it is necessary to join forces in the fight against the criminals of the dictatorship, without truce or negotiation, at the same time as fighting for the punishment of the crimes committed by Bolsonaro in the last four years.
Remnants and repressions
When it was 50 years since the military coup, in 2014, Bolsonaro was “only” a low clergy congressman, the government was headed by Dilma Rousseff (PT), and an entire majority sector of “progressivism” would have us believe that social and political polarization was behind us.
Although the activities of the Truth Commission for the first time officially recognized the crimes of the dictatorship, its very scope of activities was limited by the obstruction of any punishment of the torturers and killers of the dictatorship, unlike what was seen in other Latin American countries.
As Vladimir Safatle has insisted for many years, the amnesty for the criminals of the dictatorship prevented the country from settling accounts with these figures, allowing the strengthening of the extreme right and the return of military coup plotters to the political scene, as seen during the Bolsonaro government. At the same time, Brazil continues to live with military police who barbarize slums and poor communities in the country, and has seen the formation of militias, commanded by members of the security apparatus, whose origins can be found in former extermination and torture groups mobilized or tolerated by the military dictatorship and the civilian governments that succeeded it.
Dictatorship never again: no amnesty for the coup plotters, genocidaires, murderers and torturers of yesterday and today!
In this important week that marks the memory of our country, it is very important to keep up the struggle for the end of the amnesty for the criminals of the dictatorship and for the exemplary punishment of the crimes of Bolsonaro and his gang, such as the genocide of the Covid-19 pandemic, the sabotage campaign of the 2022 election, the attempted coup d’état of January 2023, and the handing over of the national heritage full of evidence of shady transactions, of which the Arab “gifts” seem to be just a hint.
Throughout Brazil, there will be demonstrations that will continue to echo the cry “no amnesty” that was heard on January 1st and that will remember all those who paid with their lives to defend the freedom of the Brazilian people. May we honor their memory by not allowing Bolsonarism to go unpunished. This is the way to avoid the return of Bolsonaro and the far right. Dictatorship never again!
