Bolsonaro’s crimes: We must judge, punish and repair

The genocide against the Yanomami people demands reparation and justice with Bolsonaro and his allies being held accountable.

In the second season of the series “Hunters,” Hitler is put on trial after being captured in his hideout in Argentina. The fictional series stages a hypothetical trial of the monster of the century, just as 11 Nazis were tried at Nuremberg in real life. Pinochet was convicted in the trial conducted by Spanish judge Baltasar Garzón, Alberto Fujimori is in prison. Videla, Massera and Galtieri sat in the dock. Bolsonaro must have his hour.

It is impossible not to be revolted by the images of the Yanomami. They were shocking. Deaths, malnutrition, violence against an indigenous people. This is the legacy of four years of the Bolsonaro government, accomplice of the miners, writing another chapter in the genocidal catalog.

Bolsonaro must be extradited immediately to stand trial.

A responsible person with a first and last name

The massacre of the Yanomami must stop immediately. And those responsible must pay for their crimes.

The miners benefit from a veritable system of privileges, which guarantees their profits and violence and leads to the extermination of the Yanomami. As Davi Kopenawa, Yanomami leader, stated in an interview, “more than 570 Yanomami children under the age of five have died as a result of mercury contamination from illegal mining, malnutrition, diarrhea, respiratory diseases and malaria in the last four years.”

The cogs that sustain illegal mining are the constitutive basis of the Bolsonarist project. They involve local power schemes, where it is estimated that 70,000 miners operate illegally, with shady relationships with public authorities, and omission from civil and military spheres. The expression of impunity goes by the name of Pedro Prancheta, the businessman responsible for many of the mines. Opening the gates of hell was the program of Minister Salles when he “talked of passing the herd”.

Bolsonaro, still as a deputy, had presented a project, in 1993, in collusion with loggers and miners, to put an end to the demarcation of the Yanomami reserve. The viciousness of destruction, hatred and genocide that marks Bolsonaro’s political action comes from a long way back.

The new facts that arrived at the end of this week only corroborate the need to continue closing in on those responsible for the genocide, which unites the extermination of native peoples with attempts at a coup to shut down the political regime. The arrest of the fascist Daniel Silveira and the bombastic revelations of Senator Marcos do Val to Veja magazine.

It is necessary to mobilize

One cannot rely solely on the good intentions of political actors. It is essential to mobilize society to reverse Bolsonaro’s legacy and to ensure that there is justice.

The process of transition from dictatorship to democracy in the 1980s had impunity as the basis of the pact that sustained the New Republic. To repeat this posture, with other actors, in the present time, would be a disaster. Not by chance, the slogan that is heard with more intensity in the demonstrations is “No Amnesty”. The trial and punishment must come together with a policy of reparation for all those who were affected by the genocide.

We need to organize the social energy that repudiates the genocidal practices to force Bolsonaro, his clan, and those around him (generals like Pazuello) to be tried and punished. There is no other way out: organize the struggles and categories, the demands and a plan of struggles to win a social majority.

The calendar that is in place must be strengthened. In the coming days, the youth will meet at the UNE Biennial, cultural sectors will organize carnival blocks with a democratic content, and the movements are preparing a March of struggles. On March 8th, women will take to the streets, on March 14th, five years without Marielle to demand justice. Besides the popular demands for housing, wages, among others.

PSOL in action

The PSOL is oriented to enforce the demands of the people, maintaining an independent position. In this sense, the candidacy of Chico Alencar, separated from the bloc that united the PT and the PL to reelect Lira, fulfilled an important role.

Our place is to organize the demands of the people, to be the front line of the fight against the extreme right and accompany the actions of the movements, so they can influence the relation of forces.

In a year that has already begun with intense events, we are inspired by the current Peruvian rebellion, which teaches us that only through social struggle will we advance towards the fulfillment of demands and basic rights for our people.
